Flight Journal, Dec 2002
The Cradle of Aviation Museum on Long Island in Garden City, NY-a must-see destination for aviation enthusiastsofficially opened its doors in May of this year. The museum is housed in two fully renovated pre-WW II Mitchell Field military hangars with spacious adjoining facilities that include a four-story atrium and the Leroy R.
& Rose W. Grumman IMAX Dome Theater. Visitors will discover a spectacular collection of air- and spacecraft associated with or built on Long Island. The museum's eight exhibit galleries, housed in the Donald Everett Axinn Air and Space Museum Hall, contain 70 of Long Island's air- and spacecraft arranged in chronological order. Exhibits range from a 1912 air meet at Belmont Park to a walk on the lunar surface near an original Apollo lunar module. The museum's priceless collection includes a Curtiss JN-4 Jenny that was once owned by Charles Lindbergh and an original 1909 Bleriot monoplane. The Red Planet Cafe offers dining in a Martian ambience. For more information, contact the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Lindbergh Blvd., Garden City, NY 11530; (516) 572-4111; www.cradleofaviation.org.
