ON AUGUST 27, 2003, AN F-5E AIRCRAFT WITH A MODIFIED FORWARD section took off on a test flight to demonstrate that by changing a supersonic aircraft's shape, the intensity of the sonic boom it produces will be reduced. A team led by Northrop Grumman Corp., DARPA and NASA made aviation history with a new technology that could usher in a new era of supersonic flight.
