Loire Rendezvous

Flight Journal, Feb 2004 by West, Philip E

UNDER A FULL MOON IN 1943, Lysanders of 161 Special Operations Squadron turn onto their final course to a clandestine landing field somewhere in occupied central France.

Based at Tempsford, Bedfordshire, and often operating from Tangmere to shorten flight distances, Lysander pilots-flew a dead-reckoning course using rudimentary navigational equipment to their first turning point, usually the River Loire. The rnoonlit town of Blois is easily distinguishable by its chateau, churches and bridges, with the forest of Chambord just beyond. Using torchlights, the agents in the art cockpit prepare for landing. -Philip E. West
