Two-vehicle collision: Failure to heed stop sign: Paraplegia: Settlement

Raub v. Madam, Pa., Lehigh County C.C.P., No. 97-C-- 1351, Oct. 19,1999.

Raub, 24, was driving through an intersection when he collided with a garbage truck. He suffered a fractured spinal cord and is now paraplegic. He was an apprentice millwright, earning approximately $12,300 annually. His past medical expenses were about $211,000, and future medical expenses are estimated at $1.22 million.

Raub sued the owner of the garbage truck, alleging the driver was negligent in ignoring a stop sign.

The parties settled for $5.9 million. Defendant contributed $5 million, and an excess insurance carrier covered the remainder of the settlement.

Plaintiff's experts included Andrew Verzilli, economics, Ottsville, Pa., and Jasen Walker, vocational/medical life care planning, Valley Forge, Pa.

Defendant's experts included Robert M. Cohen, neurology, and Jerome M. Staller, economics, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; Donald E. Jennings, psychology, Feasterville, Pa.; and Michael Eugene Shatto, life care planning, Sorrento, Fla.
