Moniz v. Graspointner-Carpenter, Inc., Cal., Stanislaus County Super. Ct., No. 252093, May 2, 2001.

Moniz, 29, slipped and fell in a fast-food restaurant. She suffered injuries to her right knee, including a torn medial meniscus and a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Moniz underwent three surgeries for arthroscopic repair, ligament reconstruction, and scar tissue removal. Her past medical expenses were $38,000, and her future medical costs are estimated at $15,000. A homemaker, she did not claim lost earnings.

Moniz sued the company that owned the restaurant. She claimed that the floor had just been mopped and defendant's employees had failed to put out a warning sign.

A jury awarded $253,000.
