Canadian hero

The Canadian Warplane Heritage has repainted its Consolidated PBY-5A C-FPQL to honor Flight Lieutenant David Hornell. Flying with No. 162 Squadron, Hornell won the Victoria Cross in a 24 June 1944 mission off the Shetland Islands. One of the Catalina's crew spotted the German U-boat U-1225 on the surface of the North Sea.
The Catalina immediately attacked but the heavily-armed U-boat scored numerous hits on the Catalina with its deck guns. With an engine and wing on fire, Hornell pressed his attack and hit the U-boat with depth charges. The U-boat sank in a matter of minutes. The burning engine fell from the wing and Hornell attempted to land the craft in the heavy swells of the North Sea. Only one life raft remained operational and the crewmen took turns sitting in the raff and then going into the freezing water. They were not rescued until 21 hours later and two of the men had already died from exposure. Hornell, who had been wounded, died from his injuries and exposure shortly after being rescued. The Catalina had previously been operated in bright fire bomber colors after it was donated to the CWH by the Government of Quebec in 1995.
