Album: In this month's selection, we examine some aircraft that float!

Air Classics, Dec 2000 by O'Leary, Michael

During the 1950s through the 1970s, several companies offered very popular amphibian service from Long Beach, California, to Catalina Island. The services were usually run by the rugged Grumman Goose but also a few really unique aircraft including a Sikorsky S-43 and a four-engine Sikorsky VS-44 (this is the aircraft that was recently restored and is now on display with the New England Air Museum).

Increasing costs and a few nasty accidents eventually retired the venerable Goose but a follow-on service with Grumman Mallards was attempted but also eventually failed. Grumman Goose N333F of Catalina Flying Boats is seen approaching the boarding ramp at Wilmington, California - note that the landing gear is down.
