Junkers recovered

Air Classics, Dec 2000

A substantially intact Junkers Ju 88A-5 was recovered from a ford in southern Norway on 31 August. The aircraft came down in June 1942 at Kilsforden near Kragero with two German crewmen, According to local reports, the pair were defecting but one died in the water while the second was handed over to the Germans and taken back to Germany and executed.

Due to a navigation error, the plane ran out of fuel and sank to the bottom in 200 feet of water. The aircraft, in remarkable condition; was discovered during 1991 and recently plans were made to raise the plane, When the Junkers broke the water's surface, the condition of the plane was intact with camouflage paint and markings wellpreserved. The engines and glass nose were detached but it is planned to raise those units in the near future. The Junkers was taken to Gardermoen Airport near Oslo where it will be restored. Thanks to Helge Arvid Tomes for the information.
