Last warrior

Air Classics, Sep 2001 by O'Leary, Michael

Last year, the old paint was stripped and new aluminum paint was sprayed on the airframe which gives a much more accurate depiction of what the bomber looked like when it flew in natural metal finish. As this article is going to press, Aluminum Overcast is finishing its west coast tour and heading back to Oshkosh where, once again, it will be a big hit at AirVenture 2001.

THE FUTURE

The EAA realizes that Aluminum Overcast, as well as being a profit center, really helps promote the organization across America. Currently, the EAA hopes to keep the bomber flying for many more years to come. Airframe and engine parts are available and the enthusiasm from the public just seems to keep growing. After its yearly tour, the B17G goes into deep maintenance during the winter and appears the following spring in pristine condition and ready to do it all over again. Hal, Bob, and the rest of the B-17 volunteers also fully intend to keep displaying this classic in the skies over America. We don't know what the 2002 tour schedule will be for Aluminum Overcast but that information will be available later this year along with ride availability by calling the EAA B-17 tour office at (800) 359-6217.
