Amazing discovery at Chino

Air Classics, Apr 2002

Chino Airport has been getting a major new taxiway installed and considerable digging has been going on for the past couple of months. Most readers realize that during World War Two, Chino was a training base - Cal-Aero Field - and after the war it was a storage yard for retired military aircraft.

Unfortunately, most of the hundreds of aircraft at Chino were scrapped. However, the construction for the taxiway is turning up piles of World War Two aircraft parts including Airacobra landing gear, A-20 Havoc seats, ammunition boxes, stainless steel exhaust shrouds for P-38 Lightnings, all sorts of armor plate, and lots of other bits and pieces including things like B-17 wing fittings. A possible treasure trove of useful bits and/or souvenirs. We will be reporting more on this discovery.
