Warbirds roadshow: The Planes of Fame Midwest WWII Fighter Tour - the start of a great adventure
Air Classics, Jun 2003 by O'Leary, Michael
As we settled into our airliner seats, Steve commented "You know, not many people realize all the hard work and costs getting these aircraft to shows. The Allisons on the P-40 and P-38 burn a gallon a minute while the Corsair's R-2800 runs about 1.2/1.4 gallons per minute. Also, you have to factor in insurance, wear and tear, etc. Some parts like tires are getting hard to find and expensive (P-38 main tires are the same as KC-97 nose tires and Steve would like to hear from people who might have serviceable examples). But, at the same time, it becomes all worthwhile when you meet people that have never seen these aircraft - it's really something to see their enthusiasm and love for the Warbirds."
We live in difficult times. Various agencies would certainly like to see the Warbirds grounded for good. Some aviation museums are doing poorly or closing down all flying operations while a new generation of reclusive collectors is buying aircraft and placing them beyond public viewing. In reality, if it were not for a very limited number of individuals and institutions, we would not see these wonderful aircraft in the air. When it comes down to it, if we want to see the Warbirds keep flying then it is our individual responsibility to contribute to the flying museums - whether it's money, skills, or parts. We have seen what happens when indifference takes over portions of our daily lives - we all lose. So, it's time to dig into our pockets and contribute - pick a museum you like and help keep it alive. If you would like to make a donation to the Planes of Fame, please call 909-597-3722. If you would like to schedule the Warbirds for your airshow, contact Mint Moore III at 513-435-2124.
