Transforming Voodoo

Air Classics, Aug 2003 by O'Leary, Michael

Hot -rod air racer becomes a two-seater

In a move that surprised many air racing enthusiasts, the potent North American P-51D N551VC Voodoo has donned a stock canopy and a second seat. The work was undertaken by L.D. Hughes at Minter Field, Shafter, California. However, all the other race modifications are in place and Voodoo will be competing at Reno 2003 according to owner Bob Button. The addition of the large stock canopy will certainly cut down a bit on overall race speeds. Following last year's Reno, Bob commented, "As long as I own Voodoo, I will have a commitment to Reno. However, if the engine sponsorship does not reach fruition, Voodoo may be back at Reno as a dual-control Mustang." Well, that hasn't happened yet and we certainly look forward to seeing the colorful racer founding the pylons at Reno 2003.
