Reno raises the stakes

Air Classics, Sep 2003 by O'Leary, Michael

For the first time, the purse is $1,000,000

Racing pilots are preparing for the 40th anniversary of the Reno Air Races and this year they will be chasing a $1,000,000 purse. The Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) has announced it will award the largest purse in its 40-year history at the 2003 event. Over the last seven years, the prize money has doubled from $500,000 to this year's $1,000,000. The increase comes on top of last year's tremendous success after suffering the cancellation of the 2001 race due to the tragic events of 9/11. "The added prize money is a testament to the commitment of the organization, to the pilots and aviation enthusiasts we so proudly serve," said Michael Houghton, President/CEO of RARA. "The legacy we will continue to support is that of sportsmanship, daring entertainment, and the aviation experience."
