ERRATA

Air Classics, Apr 2004

Add me to the list of folks rushing in with a correction to the PB-2A caption on page 57 of the December 2003 issue. The engine in the Consolidated PB-2A was not an Allison - it was a Curtiss Conqueror D-12. I was with the 36th Pursuit Squadron at Langley from 1937-1938. As assistant crew chief/aerial gunner, my plane was No. 28. My pilot was 2nd Lt. Hub Zemke!

Editor's Note: Yes, that was our mistake . The military designation for the powerplant was Curtiss V-J 570-61 of 700-hp. It is interesting to note that one aircraft out of this series became the XA-11A to flight test the new Allison V-1710.

I enjoyed the article on the P-40s in the October 2003 issue. However, you misplaced Wheeler Field by putting it south of Ford Island when, actually, it is in the high country in the middle of Oahu - about ten miles north of Ford Island. You were probably thinking of Hickam Field which is just across the harbor from Ford and also had P-40s. You also put Bellows Field six miles south of Wheeler when it is nowhere near any of these bases but is nearly 20 miles across the mountains to the east of Honolulu. This puts it on the east coast of Oahu and maybe five miles south of the Kaneohe Marine Base.
