CAF GETS A VINTAGE MIG

Air Classics, Sep 2004

Former Soviet Bloc fighter will operate out of Castle AFB

In an extremely generous gesture, Sal Rubino has donated his immaculate MiG 17 fighter to the Commemorative Air Force's Golden Gate Wing which is based at the former Castle AFB where they also keep their highly polished Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star. It would be interesting to see the CAF adding some more vintage jets to their collection as these aircraft always seem to be popular with airshow crowds. The MiG 17 was a respected opponent during the Vietnam War - especially at low altitudes where it could out-turn most American aircraft in a dogfight. Also, the plane had an extremely heavy cannon armament.
