Brigades of Gettysburg, The Union and Confederate Brigades at the Battle of Gettysburg, by Bradley M. Gottfried. 697 pages, no illustrations. Da Capo Press, 2002. $50.

This is the best book on Gettysburg to appear in several years. It takes each brigade at the battle, gives its commanders, regiments, numbers taken into action, numbers and percentage of losses, and then a brief but well done history of it before and during the battle. It draws heavily on first-person accounts to liven the unit's story, as well as give it immediacy. The higher commands, corps and divisions, also receive short histories. Maps are excellent.
