Douglas Southall Freeman

Military Images, May/Jun 2003

Douglas Southall Freeman, by David E. Johnson. 476 pages, 21 illustations. Pelican Publishing Co., 2002. $27.50.

Freeman is best known for his multi-volume biography of R.E. Lee and history of the Army of Northern Virginia. Writing, however, was only one of several careers he maintained that included editing a major newspaper, advising presidents and world leaders during two world wars, teaching college, broadcasting the news twice daily on radio, and perhaps even serving in intelligence during World War II. This is a well-written, balanced, and very readable account of a fascinating man.
