Aboriginal Nurse, The,  Apr 2000

National Aboriginal Achievement Awards Recipient

Our own Fjola Hart-Wasekeesikaw was one of the 14 recipients at the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards ceremony held in Vancouver on March 10, 2000.

The awards were created as a way to build self-esteem and pride for the Aboriginal community and to provide role models for the Aboriginal youth. These awards are bestowed to the individuals of First Nations, Inuit and Metis heritage who have reached a significant level of achievement in their respective occupation.

As ANAC's current president, Fjola has demonstrated a personal and professional commitment to furthering the goals and objectives of our organization. Fjola leads and works from a place of vision. She also partners with her colleagues at ANAC in a mutually respectful working relationship in our aspirations to further the development of Aboriginal Health Nursing and promoting the betterment of health for all Aboriginal people.

Fjola's nursing career spans 20 years of service in Aboriginal Health Nursing as a lecturer, academic, teacher and administrator. She is currently the coordinator of the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Nursing, Norway House, Cree Nation Site, a satellite Bachelor of Nursing Program. She earned her Diploma in nursing in 1972 from the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing, her Bachelor of Nursing degree in 1982 from the University of Manitoba and her Masters degree in Nursing also from the University of Manitoba in 1996.

Fjola has been honored on many occasions by her peers. These recognitions include:

Maurice Legault Clinical Cancer Nursing Fellowship Award -1993

Eleanor Jean Martin Award from the Canadian Nurses Association in 1994

Manitoba Nursing Research Institute Qualitative Thesis Award in 1996-97

Fjola also continues to be involved in the University of Manitoba's Norway House program as a lecturer.

Congratulations Fjola!
