ABORIGINAL WOMEN IN HEALTH PROFESSIONS

Aboriginal Nurse, The, Jul 2006

The Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC), along with its provincial and territorial member associations, recognized a few of their Aboriginal women who made a step towards the helping profession. Health careers consist of occupations such as social work, audiology, dentistry, emergency medical services, medicine, midwifery, naturopathy, nursing, as well as many others. For various women involved in the field, there are reasons that go much further than their own career goals and occupation. Their motivation also involves improving the overall health of the Aboriginal community, whether by example or by direct work in the field. NWAC acknowledges those women who are taking steps to make a difference.

The Alberta Aboriginal Women's Society acknowledges Chantelle Nixon, RN.

The Ontario Native Women's Association acknowledges Lisa Wilson, who is working towards her Registered Practical Nursing Degree.

The Saskatchewan Aboriginal Women's Circle Corporation acknowledges an unnamed student who is currently studying at the First Nations University College in Prince Albert in the Dental Therapy Program.

Erica Samms-Hurley recently received the Governor General's Award in Commemoration of the Persons case and also received her Nursing degree in April 2005. Congratulations from the Newfoundland Native Women's Association.

Mary Bernard is currently enrolled in the Health Care Aide Program. The New Brunswick Aboriginal Women's Council recognizes and acknowledges her commitment to helping others in the health field.
