9th Annual Health Care in Canada survey released

Aboriginal Nurse, The,  Winter 2007

News Release: November 23, 2006

The ninth edition of the Health Care in Canada survey, released November 23, 2006, provided opinions on health care issues faced by the Canadian public and health care providers. The findings were widespread indicating greater support for home and community care programs, higher medical school enrolment levels, equitable access to pharmaceuticals, ensuring the security of the Canadian vaccine supply, increased funding for research and a ban on schools selling junk food.

For the first time, the 2006 survey identified questions on Canadians' views about the negative health impact from key environmental sources and also highlights their concern for the environment and willingness to personally take action to improve health outcomes.

Currently Canadians are divided on issues of the quality of health care services available, and the impact of allowing the purchase of private health insurance for services already covered under medicare. The survey identified that wait times continue to be a concern, as well as potential errors while being treated in hospital and preparedness for public emergencies such as SARS and flooding.

The survey was based on telephone interviews with nationally representative samples of 1,004 member of the Canadian Public, 104 doctors, 100 nurses, 100 pharmacists and 100 health managers. The interviews were conducted between August 14 and September 13, 2006. The full report and summary document can be found at http://www.hcic-sssc.ca.
