Military Medicine, Jan 2002 by Duffy, John C

The Year 2002 will be a special year for Military Medicine. It will represent the centennial celebration of our journal. Very few journals can look back over 100 years of publication.

I would like to share with you a quote from the Journal of the American Medical Association 1901:37:1118, welcoming the "new" journal:

"The first number (August) of a new medical magazine, the Journal of the Association of Military Surgeons, has just come to hand. It forms a volume of 224 pages, much of which in this issue is taken up with the proceedings of the association, lists of members, etc., though there are also several original articles. During the present association year it will be issued quarterly, but it is the intention to ultimately adopt the monthly form, and to devote the space in future issues more fully to original contributed matter. The Journal occupies a hitherto unfilled niche in American medical journalism and it has our cordial wishes for its success. The list of the membership of the association it represents shows that it starts with what ought to be a very respectable assured patronage. It is under the able editorial management of Dr. James Evelyn Pitcher, Captain (retired), U.S.A." [JAMA Vol. 286, No. 16, p. 1944, October 2001.]

It is a source of great pride for me to serve as the journal's Editor as we begin the next 100 years of publication.

Even though there was no AMSUS Annual Meeting in 2001, the Editorial Board members met November 9, 2001. I would like to share with you some of the issues we discussed.

We all agreed that the Year 2001 was an extraordinary year for Military Medicine. There were two superb supplements: "Solving the Mystery of Yellow Fever," edited by COL John R. Pierce, MC, USA (Ret.), and James V. Writer, MPH; and "Operational Impact of Psychological Casualties from Weapons of Mass Destruction," the proceedings from the July 2000 Conference sponsored by The Office of the Army Surgeon General and the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute.

We added a new feature - the Case Management Study Section, under the direction of LTC Allen J. Taylor, MC, USA, and Director of Cardiovascular Research at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. We hope to provide our readers with this feature on a regular basis.

We have increased the number of articles in the journal; at the same time, there has been an increase in the number of manuscripts submitted for our consideration. As a result, our reviewers have received extra work in order to meet the demand. I take this opportunity to fl-thank all our reviewers whose work is responsible for the quality of our manuscripts. I am indebted to all of them.
