Docosanoid Eescula approved

Optometric Management, Sep 2000

CIBA Vision received FDA approval to market unoprostone isopropyl ophthalmic solution 0.15% (Rescula), a synthetic docosanoid compound used to treat open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

"Unlike non-cardioselective beta blockers, Rescula safely lowers intraocular pressure without affecting cardiovascular or pulmonary function," says Dan Myers, president of CIBA Vision's North American Ophthalmics Group.

The drug, which was tested during clinical studies involving 1,100 patients at 50 sites, is the only ocular therapy containing a docosanoid. Docosanoids are lipids that are naturally derived from docosahexaenoic acid, an essential agent in the development and normal functioning of the retina.

Dosing for Rescula will be b.i.d., and the drug takes effect within 24 hours. The company reports that the medication provides a consistent level of IOP reduction throughout the day with no loss of efficacy over 12 months, according to clinical studies.
