Florida focuses on sustainability

Building Operating Management, Nov 1998

Florida's vulnerability to global warming is a good reason for the state to take a proactive role in developing sustainable technologies, says a state panel.

The Energy Advisory Committee of the Governor's Commission for a Sustainable South Florida wants to see the state take a lead in the development of sustainable technologies. The essentials to do so are available within the state, including cutting-edge research facilities, and plenty of solar energy and other renewable resources that will help develop new technologies.

Florida stands to take the brunt of potential climate changes brought on by global warming- a rise in sea level and tropical storm activity. A preview of the ecological and economical effects were seen after Hurricane Andrew hit the state in 1992, the committee says.

Following Texas' example of developing a strategic energy plan, the Energy Advisory Committee suggests the state develop an energy plan and create programs for preventing pollution, improving efficiencies, and developing clean and sustainable technologies. The committee also advises the state to remove barriers to sustainability and provide incentives and transition strategies to increase the use of energyefficient technologies. The government itself, the committee says, should take a leading role in implementing the technologies.
