GNA/GNF Awards Call for Nominations

Each year, Georgia Nurses Association recognizes nurses in various disciplines for their accomplishments during the year. These awards are presented at the Awards Banquet during GNA's Annual Meeting. This year the Awards Banquet is scheduled for Thursday, October 20th at the Columbus Convention & Trade Center Iron Works in Columbus, Georgia.

Nominations are being sought for the Staff Nurse, Ludie Andrews, and Media Awards. GNF will also present awards for Research and the Mary N. Long Award for Innovations in Nursing Practice. The criteria for each award as well as the application can be found on GNA's web, page www. georgianurses.org. The deadline for submission of nominations is August 15, 2005. No exceptions will be made.

Staff Nurse Award

Purpose: To recognize the contributions of a staff nurse who is engaged in direct patient care.

Sponsoring Organization: Georgia Nurses Association

Eligibility: A registered nurse engaged in direct patient care who, through patient advocacy, role modeling, and the promotion of professionalism and quality has made an outstanding contribution to nursing in Georgia.

Basis of Selection: The recipient will be selected primarily on the basis of the following criteria:

* Member of the Georgia Nurses Association

* A registered nurse, practicing in Georgia, who provides direct patient care

* A registered nurse who serves as a role model promoting professionalism, quality in the workplace and patient advocacy.

Nominations: Nominations may be made either by an individual or a GNA District. Submit a narrative description of the contribution(s) made by the individual, not to exceed one type written page.

Ludie Andrews Award

Purpose: To recognize a registered nurse in Georgia who best exemplifies the courage, tenacity and high ideals of Ludie Andrews.

Sponsoring Organization: Georgia Nurses Association

Eligibility: A registered nurse who has promoted activities to increase racial, ethnic and/or gender diversity in nursing education or practice.

Basis of Selection: The nominee will be selected based on the following criteria:

* Member of the Georgia Nurses Association

* Initiated activities to increase racial, ethnic, and/or gender diversity in the nursing profession.

* Participated in activities to promote awareness and respect for health practices of diverse cultures.

* Served as a role model for professional nurses in Georgia, advocating for social justice and practices that ensure safe and competent health services and environments for all people, especially the underserved and underrepresented.

Nominations: Nominations may be made by an individual or GNA District or by and agency or organization. Submit a narrative describing the individuals' contributions that support diversity, not to exceed one type written page.

Media Award

Purpose: To recognize those individuals or organizations who have acknowledged and addressed nursing issues in any of the media.

Sponsoring Organization: Georgia Nurses Association

Eligibility: Individual(s) or organizations that have acknowledged and addressed nursing issues in their medium.

Basis of Selection: The recipient(s) will be selected primarily on the basis of the following criteria:

* Accurate and thought provoking depiction of nurses and nursing issues

* Utilizing media as a tool to bring awareness to and support of the nursing profession

* That promotes the positive image of nurses and the nursing profession Nominations: Nominations may be made by an individual or GNA District. Submit a narrative description of the contribution(s) made by the individual or organization, not to exceed one type written page. Nomination should include any articles, audiotapes or video clips as supportive documentation.

Research Award

Purpose: The Eesearch Award was established to assist a nurse researcher by providing financial support ($1500) for research that will enhance the profession of nursing and/or impact the health and health care of Georgia citizens through evidence-based research/practice.
