YOUNGSTER CODE BOOK

Jackson, Robert. Secret Codes: Create and Send Your Own Hidden Messages and Cryptic Communications. Running Press Book Publishers, Philadelphia, PA 19103-4399 USA. 2002. Book and Kit. $19.95.

This innovative book and kit is designed for youngsters, ages 8 years and up. It contains everything needed to create and communicate via a variety of codes. Included are two sets of semaphore flags, two Morse code units (AA batteries not supplied), two cylindrical cipher devices, originally invented by Thomas Jefferson and independently invented by others. The U. S. Army's cylindrical cipher device, M-94, developed by Parker Hitt and Joseph Mauborgne was used from 1922 to 1943. The two devices in this kit are reasonable smaller replicas.

The colorful 32-page book describes and pictures a great variety of codes: smoke signals, Tally Sticks, Hieroglyphics, Runes, Car License Plates, Merchant Marks, International Signal Flags, Semaphore, Sign Language, Pigpen Cipher, Invisible Ink, Morse Code, Braille, Trellis Cipher/Cardan Grille, and much more.

Having youngsters learn how to send secret messages to each other via Morse code, semaphore signal flags, the Jefferson cipher wheel and other techniques can an exciting, educational, and enjoyable experience.
