Meet your new board members: Sandra Pepicello

Arizona Nurse,  Mar 2000

Where do you work and how long have you been in your present position? I am dean of the nursing programs at the University of Phoenix. I have been in that position for five years.

What gives you the most satisfaction in your position? The ability to direct the education curriculum for nursing is very challenging. Assisting nurses to acquire the necessary skill sets to be successful in today's health care environment is exciting and rewarding. It is a great pleasure to work with faculty who are strategically located in the industry and can, thereby, influence nursing education.

What schools of nursing did you attend? BSN, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio. MS in Nursing from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. PhD in Health Education from University of Toledo, Toledo, Ohio.

Do you or have you had a mentor in nursing? I have had two quality mentors in my nursing career. My first mentor helped me navigate the nursing academic arena, learn how to be a critical evaluator and to develop a love for continued learning. My second mentor provided the insight and guidance to solidify my philosophical beliefs about nursing and its practice.

Any comments for the AzNA membership? As a new board member, I am looking forward to advancing the views and perspectives of all nurses within the state of Arizona. The professional advocacy program being disseminated by AzNA will be critical to the survival of nursing and quality health care. I would encourage all members to develop the personal skills of nursing advocacy and promote them whenever possible.

Deducting ANA/AzNA Dues on your 1999 Tax Return

For AzNA members still working on their taxes, a reminder about deductability of AzNA dues:

Dues paid to tax-exempt organizations that engage in lobbying activities are not deductible to the extent of the organization's lobbying expenditures. The American Nurses Association and the Arizona Nurses Association participate in lobbying activities and must comply with t4is law.

The American Nurses Association has provided us with a formula to calculate our percentage of lobbying expenses. Based on not be deductible as an ordinary and not be deductible as an ordinary and necessary business expense on your 1999 tax return is 21.8%.
