What AzNA did for you in 1999

AzNA is your organization. You elect its leaders and they work for the members of AzNA, guided by actions taken by members at convention, the strategic initiatives and Legislative Agenda. Each year the Arizona Nurse highlights the activities that move the association forward to the benefit of association members and the greater nursing community. Here are the 1998-1999 Strategic Initiatives and activities for 1999.

STRENGTHEN MEMBERSHIP AND PARTNERSHIPS

* Maintained membership in coalitions: Consortium of Complementary Health Organization, Children's Action Alliance, Osteoporosis Coalition, Mental Health Coalition

* Represented AzNA at Arizona Organization of Nurse Executives (AzONE) Meetings

* Supported joint meetings of boards of AzNA and AzONE

* Attended meetings of Chapters 1, 2, 5, 16, 30

* Offered a variety of benefit programs to members through ANA

* Continued to improve ANA membership billing services

* Represented members on Colleagues in Caring Leadership project

* Contributed $7,000 to Phase II of Colleagues in Caring

* Received $3,000 plus from Colleagues in Caring for production of Quick Guides

* Cosponsored convention with Student Nurses Association of Arizona

* Facilitated publication of AzNA-AzONE article on expectations of new graduates.

ADVOCATE FOR PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE

* Presented Professional Advocacy program to AzONE Board, AzONE, and several university leadership classes

* Received grants totaling nearly $20,000 to sustain and advance the Nursing Report Card project

* Confirmed 7 hospitals and 4 hospitals pending submission of nursing data to national data repository

* Participated actively in several meetings and conference calls to build the Work Place Advocacy State Nurses Associations Coalition

* Published Quick Guide to Nursing Practice

* Published articles in Arizona Nurse on Professional Advocacy (nurses' health, portfolios, curricula vitae, and resumes)

* Used Professional Advocacy as convention theme

INFLUENCE PUBLIC POLICY FOR HEALTH

* Supported AzNA members for appointment to the state board of nursing

* Lobbied in support of four year licensure and other bills affecting patient care and nursing practice

* Conducted Nurses Legislative Day with over 300 nurses and nursing students attending

* Worked to focus efforts of pharmacists to expand their scope of practice

STRENGTHEN STATEWIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATION OF NURSES

* Approved 325 continuing education programs and 10 providers

* Provided leadership preceptorships for senior baccalaureate students

* Included nursing students on Legislative Committee, Legislative Day Planning Committee, and Chapter Presidents Council

* Initiated planning with Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals for major clinical conference on May 5, 2000

* Provided continuing education at Legislative Day, Convention and first Professional Advocacy Workshop

ASSURE ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS OF AzNA

* Launched Arizona Nurses Foundation fundraising campaign

* Completed 1999 in the black for association operations

* Conducted analysis, shifted long-term investments to improve interest earnings

* Renewed agreement to provide AzONE support services

* Renewed lease agreement with tenant for 3 year term

* Established website associated with ANA's nursingworld.com

* Streamlined AzNA Bylaws

* Developed new logo and key concepts for marketing

* Sent delegates to ANA House of Delegates

* Sent President and Executive Director to ANA Constituent Assembly meetings, and meetings of Western SNAs
