Nurse practitioners: More than a doctor's helper

Arizona Nurse,  Sep 2002

The Arizona Nurse Practitioner Council had another great meeting this year at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs, in Phoenix. We had a 10% increase in the number of attendees over last year. Most attendees were from Arizona. The most popular conference topics on Saturday, July 27th, included: Suturing, CXR Interpretation, Syndrome X, Succeeding with Failure, Treatment and Management of CHF, How to Bring Alternative Therapy to Traditional Clinical Practice. On Sunday, topics included Investments, Contract Negotiation, Independent Practice Issues, ICD-9 Coding and a professional fashion show sponsored by Harold's at the Biltmore. The highlights of the meeting included a well attended Mix, Meet and Mingle Awards Gala on Saturday night, following the meeting, the Arizona Republic published an article titled, " NP's more than Doctor's helper."

A group of NP's discussed the "White Paper" Development and the topic of discussion was, "What are the barriers to clinical practice as NP's in Arizona, and what steps need to be taken to assist in overcoming these barriers". Many strategies were discussed at great length along with potential development of sub-committees. For more information or to become involved, please contact Ken Wysocki at kenfnp@ready2host.net.

Thanks to the attendees we have a great list of potential topics to cover for July of 2003. We are looking for members to take an active role and to help develop an interesting and well planned meeting for July 2003. If you are interested we would love to hear from you. Please contact Carrie Solodky at lubdub@cox.net or Angie Golden at akgrn@aol.com.
