CNPS approves new liability services for registered nurses

Alberta RN,  Nov/Dec 1998

Alberta registered nurses will soon have access to new professional liability services from the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS). Since 1994, CNPS has been looking at providing legal protection for disciplinary proceedings, witness appearances and employer-employee disputes. Services CNPS has approved so far include legal assistance for nurses who are witnesses at legal proceedings, involved in coroner's or medical examiner's investigations, involved in sexual assault trials or who are being investigated for criminal allegations prior to charges being laid.

Through the CNPS-sponsored group purchase plan, nurses will now have access to additional malpractice coverage and to directors and officers' liability insurance. Business liability insurance for nurses in independent practice is also available. The next services to be approved will be legal support for employer-employee disputes and for the defence of professional discipline cases. For more information, contact CNPS managing director Pat McLean at (613) 237-2133.
