RN honored for global commitment to nursing
Alberta RN, Nov/Dec 1999
The work of a former Calgary registered nurse to advance the practice of nursing in developing countries was the focus of a recent tribute in the Calgary Herald. Lorraine Tinevez, who died last spring in Islamabad, Pakistan, dedicated her life to helping nurses achieve a higher standard of education and professional practice in Pakistan, Argentina, Peru, Honduras and Nicaragua.
A 1965 graduate of the Holy Cross Hospital School of Nursing, Sister Lorraine Marie began her career as a missionary nun in Comodorio Rivadavia, Argentina. She spent 12 years raising the educational standards for nurses and battling traditional attitudes that nursing was not a respectable profession for women.
Tinevez later left the Sisters of Providence Order but continued her work in South and Central America through projects with CUSO, the United Nations and the World Health Organization.
"She was dedicated to helping the underdog and was acutely aware of the political situation in all these countries," Tinevez' sister, Bea Violini was quoted in the June 6 article.
Most recently Tinevez had worked for four years in Pakistan with the Pakistan Nursing Council to standardize nursing education and have nurses registered in that country. She had also just begun work on a PhD program in international nursing before her sudden death of pneumonia last March.
