CNA Events in Smoke-Free Municipalities
CARRIED
BE IT RESOLVED, That future Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) conferences be held in municipalities with bylaws requiring 100 percent smoke-free indoor public places and workspaces.
FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED, That CNA urge other provincial and national organizations, especially health organizations, to adopt the same policy.
FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED, That CNA communicate this to jurisdictions that would be potential holders of CNA events.
AARN Elections and Resolutions Committee Chair Marilyn Will spoke to the smoke-free resolution on AARN's behalf. The resolution was carried.
Additional Support to Combat HIV/AIDS in Africa
REFERRED TO CNA BOARD
BE IT RESOLVED, That CNA be commended for its leadership in supporting the development of nursing infrastructures in developing countries and thus helping to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic in these countries,
BE IT FURTHER RESOEVED, That CNA urge the Government of Canada to increase its support to developing countries for the prevention, counselling, care and treatment of HIV/AIDS and in particular support the education, training and mobilization of nursing organizations and personnel in these countries to accelerate the battle with the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
Due to time limitations, the HIV/AIDS in Africa resolution was not tabled during the business meeting, but was referred to the CNA board of directors for consideration at their next meeting.
In addition to putting these two resolutions forward, AARN President-Elect Sheila McKay spoke in favour of a motion by the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario. The resolution called for CNA to lobby the prime minister, minister of health and other political leaders in the federal government to use all available means in ending for-profit delivery of health care in Canada, to remove incentives that encourage public-private partnerships and to commit to ending these partnerships using all available means. The resolution also called for CNA to strongly advocate for the enforcement of the Canada Health Act to ensure that health services in all provinces and territories are delivered in a publicly funded, not for profit delivery basis. The resolution was carried.
