Kansas Nurse, Sep 2003 by Johnson, Terri, Barrett, Patricia Kohls, Putnam, Julie, Ternus, Jean, Et al

Chuck Hampton, President

District 11

It has been an exciting and rewarding year for District 11 at our monthly meetings. We have had wonderful programs and speakers including our district members as well as others from the health care community and state officers. District 11 has had two CNE programs. The topics have included, The Nurse Reinvestment Act by Terri Roberts, Executive Director of KSNA and ER Potpourri by Jeff Strickler, R.N., MA, CEN, EMT-P, Nurse Director: Emergency, Trauma, Burn and Ambulatory Services at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Other topics presented included, The Wound Care Clinic at Newman Regional Health, Hormone Replacement

Therapy and a Legislative Update. In addition District 11 participated in "Cover the Uninsured Week", along with the nursing students in N-KANS with an editorial in the Emporia Gazette and posters displayed at Newman Division of Nursing and Emporia State University.

We had some social activities with a dinner to welcome new district officers, a coffee and salad supper for one of our CNE programs. Although we continue to struggle for active involvement of our members, membership continues to grow.

We are looking forward to another great year with our members in KSNA.

Diane Bertone, President

District 16

We met five times during 2002-03. Some areas of interest over the past year include:

Sally Schmidt continued as our representative with the KSNA Membership Committee. During the November meeting, KACN concerns about KSNA membership were discussed. We are working toward improving membership numbers.

A proclamation signed by the Ellis County Commissioners on April 28th, proclaimed NATIONAL NURSES WEEK 2003 (May 6 12) and RUTH JOY RECOGNITION DAY (May 6). The Commissioners celebrated "the Registered Nurses who comprise our nation's largest health care profession and who, on a daily basis, provide needed services to those with health care needs". The Commissioners further acknowledged Ruth Joy, one of our members, for "dedication to a lifetime of epitomizing what nurses should be, for sharing her talents in Ellis County in providing quality nursing care and outstanding volunteer work".

Meeting programs included Chris Donner, ARNP-FNP on "First Call for Help"; and Sue George, ARNP-FNP, on the Veteran's Administration Clinic.

Raised funds and provided personal care items for Northwest Kansas Family Shelter with well-attended CNE offering, co-sponsored by Hays Medical Center: "New dermatological procedures including Botox", featuring donated presentations from Heartland Dermatology by the board-certified dermatologist Dr. Wallace Weber and Stacy Stramel ARNP-FNP.

Jo Ann Doan, member, served on the Rural Health Policy Agenda: Kansas Rural Health Options Project Task Force.

Members spoke to graduating classes, encouraging KSNA membership, and providing gifts for drawing winners.

Mary R Hassett, President

District 18

Last summer, members returned a postcard survey describing what they would like from their nursing organization. Board members used the information to plan meetings for the upcoming year. Other suggestions were implemented as well.
