Kansas Nurse, Sep 2003 by Johnson, Terri, Barrett, Patricia Kohls, Putnam, Julie, Ternus, Jean, Et al

Members were given the opportunity this year of receiving the newsletter by e-mail. Fifteen of the 45 members (33%) chose this option, which will reduce the cost of paper/postage and the time involved in mailing out 6-7 issues.

"On the Scene with District 18" continues with visits to:

* A physician-managed Aesthetics Center.

* Hale Library (KSU).

* Geary Community Hospital.

* Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Center.

A member presented a CNE (1) program on preventing work related injuries. We were able to see and experiment with new equipment designed to prevent injuries on the job.

Three social meetings occurred in September, December, and May. Two members, instructors at MATC, took nursing students to Day at the Legislature and to junction City and Manhattan Commissioners' meetings proclaiming National Nurses' Week in May. Our Membership Chairperson gave a presentation on the benefits of KSNA/ANA membership to the graduating class of ADNs.

Additional activities included:

* A display poster and a KNF Theme basket donated at the Convention fundraiser, and Toothbrushes to Head Start.

* The first Norma Parker Scholarship will be available to student nurses in 2003.

Sue Philipp, Past President

District 19

District 19 has had a productive year. We organized a traveling membership display and scheduled its placement at numerous healthcare facilities throughout the district. In the spring, we hosted a pizza luncheon for the senior nursing students at Dodge City Community College and presented the purposes and benefits of ANA and KSNA Membership. In May, for National Nurses Week, we placed a large banner at Senator Pat Roberts' office in recognition of his contributions to the passage of the Nurse Reinvestment Act. We arranged for newspaper coverage with a photo of the banner at this office and an article celebrating National Nurses Week and the year's activities. We also arranged a display at the Dodge City Public library with many historical nursing items. It has been an exciting and busy year.

Linda Gail Bush, President.

District 20

Once again District 20 has completed a productive year. We have grown in membership with the following new members: Rebecca Adamson, Lynn Peak and Carrie Farrington. The executive board met in September and planned the yearly events. In October a dinner/business meeting was held at Bricktown Restaurant in Pittsburg. Several members attended the state convention in Wichita. On December 3, 2003 the District hosted a holiday reception for graduate nursing students at Pittsburg State University. Our annual Legislative Breakfast was held in January 2003 at the Western Sizzlin' with Senator Jim Barone, Representative Bob Grant, and Representative R.J. Wilson in attendance. A special legislative recognition was given to Cecilia Waggoner, founder and fist chairman or the PSU Department of Nursing in honor of Mrs. Waggoner's 90th birthday and the award was presented publicly by Carolyn Keil at the Pittsburg State University Nursing Pinning Ceremony on May 17, 2003. Four members attended the 27th Annual Day at the Legislature on February 13th. The Annual Spring conference, "Today's Families at Risk-How Can I help?" was held in cooperation with the Department of Nursing and Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. District 20 was pleased that KSNA Legislative Chairperson, Carolyn Middendorf was able to serve as a panel speaker at this conference. Linda Bitner and Ellen Carson hosted the Senior Student Reception on May 5, 2003 in honor of Nurses' Week. Officer elections were held in June and the results were announced at the Annual Meeting on June 24, 2003 at the Bricktown Restaurant in Pittsburg, Kansas. District 20's only fundraiser, "A Stress Free Sale" was held during the Annual Meeting. Ellen Carson was honored at the Annual Meeting for her 20 years of service to District 20; our loss will be District 1's gain as she moves to Topeka and Washburn University.
