No inn, no bell boy

The choir was rehearsing for its Christmas concert. A choir member was becoming exasperated because he couldn't stop referring to the song Carol of the Drums as "Carol of the Bells." The person next to him finally said, "Remember it this way: It's the little drummer boy, not the little bell boy." "You're so right" he admitted. "There couldn't have been a little bell boy. There was no room in the inn."

Proclaiming boredom

My kids had been learning Christmas carols and songs during Sunday school at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Park Ridge, Ill. In the car one day, I chuckled when my daughter, while singing her heart out, proclaimed, "Go tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is bored."

Cold and flu absolution

Following the confession of sins, the bulletin at St. Barnabas Lutheran Church, Cary, Ill., included this absolution: "God forgives our snot because we are good ...." The pastor caught the mistake and said, "God forgives our sins, not because we are good but because God is good." Only a few people giggled, proving once again that Lutherans take God's grace seriously.

On Reformation Day, I compared Martin Luther King Jr. with Martin Luther during the children's sermon. I had pictures of both and asked the kids who Martin Luther King Jr. was named after. I was looking for them to say "Martin Luther," but one astute lad said, "His dad."

Good advertising

At First Lutheran Church, Harvey, N.D., the pastor invited the children to gather around the baptismal font during a baptism. On the way back to her parents, a 3-year-old girl said excitedly, "I saw a baby get advertised!"

The organ committee at Peace Lutheran Church, Las Cruces, N.M., was selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts as a fundraiser. Their advertising slogan? Psalm 34:8: Taste and see that the lard is good.
