Lutheran, The, Jul 2004

Jennifer Weetman, as a senior at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio, won the David H.C. Read PreacherScholar Award. The $10,000 award goes to someone who demonstrates special distinction in preaching and biblical scholarship. The sermon she submitted dealt with Genesis 50:1521 and Mark 9:2-9.

Brenda J. Peterson Moore, First, St. Peter, Minn., received the Virgil Anderson award from the Association of Lutheran Development Executives for her outstanding service to the 1,000-member organization that promotes, teaches and models Christian stewardship. She serves as vice president for institutional advancement at Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn.

PhillipStaten, a senior at Roanoke College, Salem, Va., was elected national president of Mu Beta Psi, the national honorary musical fraternity that promotes service and works to expand music appreciation. Staten, who is a member of the Roanoke College Choir and Wind Ensemble, served as vice president of the college's chapter of the fraternity for two years.

Nancy Brandli, Trinity, Liberty, Texas, was named Liberty Citizen of the Year for her work with adult literacy. She has been a literacy tutor and tutor trainer for 25 years.

H. Paul Santmire, a retired ELCA pastor, received the Charles J. Miller Christian Scholar's award for the best article in the Christian Scholar's

One of 80 participants, she was first runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant in June in Quito, Ecuador. Finnessey is a 25-year-old honors graduate of Linden wood University, St. Charles, Mo., with a psychology degree. She earlier was named 2002 Miss Missouri USA. Author of a children's book, The Furrtails, she is working toward a doctorate in counseling. Pennekamp, a senior at Newberry [S.C.] College, is majoring in theater and speech communications.

Review. His story was titled "Partnership with Nature According to the Scriptures: Beyond the Theology of Stewardship."

Becky Hill, Bethany, Thompson, Iowa, was named Iowa Mother of the Year by the Iowa Affiliate of American Mothers Inc., a nonprofit, interfaith group.
