That crazy Spirit

Lutheran, The, Aug 2004

On Pentecost, the pastor told the children how the Spirit came with a "rush of a mighty wind," to which Erik, 3, replied: "The Holy Spirit came to our back yard!" "Really?" the pastor replied. "Yes. He blew our umbrella away," Erik said.

While at a Seattle Mariner's baseball game, a large seagull flew over the outfield. The young boy in front of us said to his mother: "Look, Mom, the Holy Spirit."

The children at Port Madison Lutheran Church, Bainbridge Island, Wash., listened to Pastor Lori Hoyum explain how the wind came into the room of the disciples on Pentecost. To her question, "Where did the wind come from?" our granddaughter, 3, replied, "The wind came to blow the devil away."

Katherine, our 4-year-old niece, was playing with the neighbor children and directed them: "OK, now you be the Father, and you be the Son, and I'll be the Holy Spirit."

Gotcha, 'Lutheran'

As a church secretary, I can't resist tossing this one back at The Lutheran. In the wedding ideas column (February, page 38), one of the ceremonies featured "signers for the visually impaired." Huh?

While I was looking through the May issue of The Lutheran, my 4-year-old daughter, Kari, kept pointing to each article, saying, "That's the truth!" over and over again. I must say, she was right.

The Lutheran's May cover reminds me of that old story of the worn-out $50 and $ 1 bills, which met each other when being taken out of circulation. The $50 bill extolled its wonderful life, which included visits to renowned places in Europe and Asia. The dollar expressed less joy-all too often it landed in the church offering plate.

Who knows how the senior citizens at Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Florissant, Mo., will fare at their August tour of the Missouri wineries? A notation in early publicity said: "arraignments to follow."
