GCFX units begin to appear

Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Magazine,  Dec 2000

Recently reports of mysterious gray units freshly repainted with only GCFX reporting marks began to surface recently. These units were a group ordered by CSX for long-term lease from Alstom in Montreal, Quebec. Earlier this year Alstom delivered the green and gray FURX SD40s which are owned by First Union Railcar Leasing. The original intent was for these new GCFX units also to be financed by First Union, but last-minute complications resulted in Alstom retaining ownership and leasing them to CSX instead. Units 3053-3071 were already painted in FURX colors and were simply relettered GCFX. Units in the group 3073-3102 wear a simple all-gray scheme with black trucks.

Reports indicate that Alstom is seeking another party to finance these units in the long run. This will likely result in more relettering in the future.
