The former passenger station at Shelby; Ky., was last used by the maintenance of way department in the 1980s. It was a private residence near the western entrance to the yard that was converted to a depot after the original depot was eliminated by the expansion of me eastern end of the yard in me late 1940s. A wooden freight storage building was added. Both have been derelict and an eyesore for years, and now the freight building is starting to collapse. CSX needs to realize that the neglect of its property has an adverse afreet on the local neighborhood.
The old depot at Lackey, Ky., on the E&BV Subdivision has deteriorated past the point of no return.

opposite, botlom: CSX 70748107 come off the Dawkins Subdivision (now owned by R. J. Cormon) with the "Gouge Shifter" at Dawkins, Ky., on Dec. 12, 1993. The eastward cantilever has been replaced by a high mast.
upper right: CSX C36-7 7120 has 21-car eastbound work train W031 at Bays Brunch, Ky., on September 7, 2002.
right, second from top: Signal 772 at Bull Creek (Lancer, Ky.) rarely, if ever, protected the movement of a butthead switcher (MP15AC No. 1189) in the role of leading a road train. The MP15AC's tonnage rating westbound down Big Sandy is 6,500, which is less than half that of the SD50 (rated at 15,450 tons) behind it. June 6, 1992.
below left: Westward intermediate block signal 813 at Emma, Ky., on February 15, 1987.
below right: Looking west at Beaver Junction on November 24, 1974. The track at left was the Elkhorn & Beaver Valley Subdivision to Martin. As the segment from Beaver Junction to the west end of Martin Yard, 3.2 miles, is under CTC control by the AO dispatcher, it is now referred to as the "Big Sandy Extension." The E&BV from Martin to Deane is under authority of another dispatcher. All of these signals have been retired. The primary reason for the relocation of this control point is evident-double crossovers in a curve. Several derailments occurred here over the years.
bottom left: A westbound drag behind 4156-4396 passes the east end of Harold siding on a snowy April 3, 1987. On the left is Superior Valley Coal's Hale 1-2 siding. On the right is the Harold 1 siding of Floyd County Tipple Co. Both tipples, the sidings, and the signal are now history.
bottom right: A C884 Martin-to-Shelby shifter is eastbound at the east end of Alien siding behind SD70MACs 738-744 on June 22, 2002. These signals have been retired as a control point. Presumably the switch remains as a hand-throw. (All photos by Everett N. Young)
