TV preacher Fallwell to create 'Christian' law school

Church & State, Nov 2002

TV preacher Jerry Falwell has announced plans to expand his Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., to include a law school for students "who have a desire to impact our nation and the world for our Savior."

Founded by the controversial fundamentalist Christian pastor in 1971, Liberty University will begin offering students a chance to earn law degrees in the fall 2003 semester.

Falwell has announced that the school's professors will be "committed to the inspiration and infallibility of the Bible" and "committed to the Lordship of Jesus Christ."

Liberty's law school will join an already crowded field of conservative religious legal programs in the United States.

Fellow TV preacher Pat Robertson, for example, created a law school at his Regent University in 1988. In addition, Domino's Pizza magnate Thomas S. Monaghan announced in 1999 that he was creating the Ave Maria School of Law, with assistance from Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and failed high court candidate Robert Bork.

In a letter to supporters, Falwell said his law school will be opening at a critical time because America has "legalized abortion on demand, removed prayer and Bible reading from our schools and more recently attempted to outlaw the Pledge of Allegiance because of the words `under God."'
