Lincolniana 2001-2002
Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society, Summer 2002 by Bauer, Kim
Today marks a new beginning. As curator of the Henry Horner Lincoln Collection for the past eight years I have been privileged to be a part of many undertakings. One of those has been to produce a comprehensive list of Lincoln publications for the preceding year. This "Lincolniana" article has been previously published in the pages of the Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association. However, one constant in life is that change is inevitable and with changes to the Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association come changes to the publication venue. I am honored to be able to offer to the readers of the Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society this latest catalog of Lincoln scholarship. I am particularly pleased to continue offering this annual bibliography without interruption.
This year's bibliography shows the continuing desire for the American public to know everything that is possible about our nation's sixteenth president. From fun facts and trivia to the moral and religious contents of Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address the scholarship concerning Abraham Lincoln continues unabated. This scholarship confirms the need for American society to place Abraham Lincoln in an ever-changing context. We, as a society, partially reaffirm what our legacy is by reaffirming Abraham Lincoln's legacy. That this legacy stands for different ideas to different people is not only "self-evident" but essential for a nation's growth. Nowhere is this growth more evident than with the advent of the building of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois. To finally have a proper venue to showcase the life and legacy of a person, whom many Americans consider the greatest American, is itself a constant "rebirth" and renewal of our values. This is especially important considering the recent events that portend ramifications for American society in the 21st century as momentous as those that confronted Abraham Lincoln in the 19th century. The capacity for renewal of the American democratic experience that Abraham Lincoln represents is a comfort and a necessity to us, the American people.
