AWW: Mini in-Section Vice President, Zena $icc-Secretary AV"a

1 -Elizabeth: our membership has increased by 10%, APTA by 5% in the past year. Cancer patients are surviving longer and rehab is needed. The majority of our revenue is from dues$15,000 per year. Our journal costs $10,000/year. Elizabeth requested volunteers to help get ads for our journal. Elizabeth will contact other Sections for ideas for a request for ads to be sent out-we will create a packet. We submitted our first educational grant application to Merck on February 1, for our Home Study Course. This process takes money. Thanks to Cindy and Zen for putting this together and other board members for their review.

2-Cindy: requested that if anyone has any contacts with pharmaceutical companies- could they please get loan applications from them and give them to Zen or Cindy. Our first connection was through our Vice President Mina.

3-Elizabeth: is very pleased with the response to our programming. 200 people attended Catherine Goodman's presentation. Her handout will be on our web page. Our website cost $300. APTA has a new logo-The Science of Healing, the Art of Caring.

-Thank you to Joy Cohn for getting T-shirts printed-$15, makes a good gift.

-Thank you to our excellent retiring Section officers- Cheri

Doll did a fabulous job as our Treasurer, thank you to Pam Massey for running and winning as President elect- Pam has had experience on the state and national level.

-The Section Presidents' meeting: there was talk about merging resources. For example: 2 Sections, the Section on Health Policy, Legislation and Regulation and the Section on Administration have merged. They will save money by having only one publication, one board, etc. This is a difficult process due to the need for Bylaw changes, etc.

-There was also a guest speaker. The PTAs are asking the Section Presidents for some kind of recognition for their specialty experience, not a certification, maybe a certificate, etc. The PTAs have been asked to bring the Section Presidents a proposal. Elizabeth is in favor of this recognition for them.

-The registration fees for Annual Conference will go up $15 in 2001 or 2002. This is due to the increasing costs of holding a conference. For the last 2 years, CSM has had over 4000 attendees, more than annual, with over 300 exhibitors.

-Elizabeth introduced Rick and asked him to tell us about his grant, how he got it, etc.

3-Rick Wilson: American Cancer Society Institutional Research grant-jointly administered by the cancer Center and the university. His grant was $20,000. He has a poster about this project.

New arrivals introduced themselves- Mary Lou Galantino. She was speaking about the HIV-SIG., Steve Gudas, and Mike Harris-Love.

Discussion followed about grant opportunities. 4-Cindy: discussed HIV resources on the web.

5-Charlie: answered a question about NIH-The staff at NIH made an important decision about a year ago. They had been supporting clinical affiliations for many years. Students were getting a very narrow experience with a unique patient population, perhaps not a good enough variety for a student. Also, because of the complexity of our facility, they were leaving by the time they started to know the ropes. The mission of NIH is to produce articles, chapters, and presentations out to our colleagues. So, NIH will now have 2 different training programs: a-Clinical Research Training program a 4-6 month experience in developing advanced research competencies in research questions, data analysis- they come in with a research question to work on.

b-This is a year-long program for faculty eligible for sabbatical- computers, statisticians, and subjects are available to them to study a research question- our first fellow is Cindy Pfalzer. The intent is for that person to leave with a publishable paper. 6-Sharon talked about the role in advocacy of the National Coalition of Cancer Survivors has taken.

7-Steve spoke about the journal. It comes out 3x/year. Cost is an issue for us (see board mtg for details). He requested submissions for publication. Also talked about the International Society for Rehabilitation Oncology. Noted that there were only about 35 physiatrists specializing in oncology. Steve asked for a list of interested medical practitioners. There is a need to spread information around the world, example lymphedema treatment.
