Electronic mailroom featured at MailCom
Today, Aug 2002
Postmaster General John Potter recently told a congressional subcommittee that the U.S. Postal System will see the largest decrease in 70 years; six billion fewer pieces will go through the system this year compared to last. The increased use of the Internet, a general decline in the economy, as well as expenses related to the anthrax attacks are contributing to an estimated $1.5 million loss for the service in FY2002.
It was against this backdrop that attendees met at the spring MailCom Convention in Atlantic City. In addition to bulk outbound mail shipping solutions, attendees focused on solutions and conference sessions offering advice for safe mail handling. (See story on page 36.)
As to be expected, the show floor buzzed and clacked with large installations of mail sorting, opening. extracting and routing hardware from Opex, Pitney Bowes, Ultra Systems and others. However, several vendors acknowledged that digital conversion is changing how mail is handled.
Specifically, a collaboration between IBML, MailCode and Imaging Acceptance Corp. (IAC) offered a solution for both physical mail and its electronic management. Called d-mail, the system combines MailCode's mail sorting system with IBML's ImageTrac Scanning Platform and IAC's electronic image delivery technology. The d-mail system accommodates both processed and non-- processed inbound mail using an e-mail based Web delivery, thereby eliminating the expense (and risks) of delivering physical mail.
Similarly, Xerox was promoting a digital mail distribution and fulfillment service. The service includes the digital conversion (scanning) of inbound mail and distribution via e-mail. Xerox stressed the ability to store client mail remotely (both hard-copy storage and in a password protected repository) for later digital distribution.
