Cardiovascular and pulmonary section, APTA business meeting minutes annual conference & exposition of the APTA, Indianapolis, IN June 15, 2000

Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy Journal, Sep 2000 by Garlick, Martha

Education (Donna Frownfelter)

Drs. Cassady and Tepper will be the instructors for the preconference course at CSM 2001. The topic is Evaluation and Treatment of Endurance Impairments. Other suggestions for future courses were workshops to help prepare for the specialty exam and a workshop for educators and discuss entry level competencies.

Nominations (Annie Downs for Ethel Freese)

Nominations for candidates for President and a new Nominating Committee chair should be sent to Ethel Freese. Discussion regarding a new position of "president elect" was inititated. Steve will ask June Marble to investigate in bylaw implications. More discussion will occur at CSM 2001.

Publications (Sandy Cassady)

Dr. Cassady reported on expenses that have increased due to increases in printing costs. As our contract with the Orthopaedic Section, APTA is renewed, we have switched printers to upgrade to a more digital and less expense printing process. Some increased expenses have been due to the increase in size of the publication. Revenue from advertising has offset the cost of the journal. Currently over $15,000 in ads has been sold in this year. The section's first anthology, Physiological Monitoring will be available at $15/copy. This anthology includes reprints of the manuscripts from the 2 special issues in one publication. Faculty members have requested this publication for their students. These will also be sold on the website and available at upcoming conferences.

The membership directory is underway. The Section agreed to spend $2000 for the directory. Sandy obtained $5000 in advertising dollars to offset costs. Requests of computer, graduate assistant, and honorarium increase were made to continue to assist with production of the Section's publication. All were approved.

Research (Tanya LaPier sent report)

Dr. Jane Eason will co-chair the Research Committee with Dr. LaPier. Beginning in 2001, it was decided that income from the foundation dance will be split with 50% of income going to the Foundation and 50% supporting research within the Section.

Specialty Council (Tammy Burlis)

Tammy Burlis is the new chair of Specialty Council for the Section. Diane Jewell is serving on the council again. See report in the Vol 11 Issue 12 of the Journal.

New Business

1) Mike Friedman of RehabMax.com was introduced. The internet based company develops internet continuing education courses and distance learning on their web site, with almost all the specialties. They are looking for partners to promote education and believe they can develop a mutually beneficial relationship with your Section to accomplish the following goals:

Increase awareness of your Section to improve membership opportunities

Improve capability and user accessibility to your Section's website

Distribution of quality continuing education to physical therapists

Create an easily accessible information resource

After discussing, it was agreed that the Section would work with RehabMax to further develop our Section's visibility on the Web. Dr. Cassady will assist with listing contents of current issues, possibly abstracts or articles. She needs to consult with the other editors. No fee will be charged for this type of promotion. For this exchange of content, RehabMax will develop a storefront on their Website for our Section's promotional materials (preconference course, compendeums, anthology, etc) and a link to our Website. We will reevaluate at CSM.
