National Design Engineering Show preview

NASA Tech Briefs, Feb 2003

This year, National Manufacturing Week (NMW) is comprised of five shows, including the National Design Engineering Show (NDES) and the brandnew Technology Transfer Conference & Expo (TTCE). Held March 3-6 at McCormick Place in Chicago, NMW is the largest event of its kind in North America, featuring more than 1,500 exhibitors. The National Design Engineering Show focuses on the $770 billion design engineering market, and features 804 exhibitors and special pavilions for CAD, motion technology, plastics, and rapid prototyping.

In its first year as part of NMW, the Technology Transfer Conference & Expo will present technology licensing and strategic technology development opportunities in areas such as materials, optics, communications, energy and power, manufacturing, security, product design and development, electronics, and sensors. Attendees can meet with executives from organizations such as 3M, Boeing, Caterpillar, DuPont, the Federal Laboratory Consortium, Honeywell, Motorola, NASA, and Rockwell.

Look for the following products on display on the show floor. For more information on the show, visit www.manufacturingweek.com.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will show companies how to partner with the agency to jointly develop or license some of the cutting-edge design and engineering technologies developed by NASA - technologies that can help create better products or reduce costs. Through its Commercial Technology Program, NASA has partnered with thousands of companies to help them develop better and more exciting products. VX Corp. (Palm Bay, FL) will show Version 7 of its VX(R) CAD/CAM software that incorporates dozens of new tools and enhancements, including fast "click to join" assembly modeling, direct surface deformation for quickly generating more complex shapes, and a new tool for optimizing packaging design. Also featured in the new release are new interface elements, a graphical approach to CAM planning and execution,

SpaceMouse and SpaceBall support, mold-- making enhancements, and more drafting, translation, and healing options. For Free Info Visit www.nasatech.com/vx

Booth 6311

MSC.Software, Santa Ana, CA, will premiere MSC.visualCollaboration, a turnkey software and hardware system that enables engineers to share data, graphics, chat, voice, and video in real-time between development sites. Designed to provide a real-time collaboration platform for sharing complex CAD, CAM, and CAE engineering data, the software provides a set of cross-platform interactive meeting features. Also on display will be MSC.visualNastran V5i, which provides FEA and motion simulation integrated in CATIA V5 from Dassault Systemes. For Free Info Visit www.nasatech.com/mscndes

Booth 7018

PEM Fastening Systems (Danboro, PA) offers PEM(R) self-clinching fasteners for use in stainless steel assemblies. Self-clinching stainless steel nuts, studs, standoffs, and panel fasteners install permanently in sheets as thin as 0.030". On display will be the Type PFC4(TM) stainless steel panel fastener designed to install flush into thin stainless steel sheets. The complete spring-loaded assembly with captive screw requires only one mating component to complete the attachment process. For Free Info Visit www.nasatech.com/pem

FEMLAB version 2.3 multiphysics modeling and simulation software from Comsol (Burlington, MA)

is based on MATLAB from The MathWorks. The new version includes solvers for parametric analysis, modeling of large vector field models in electromagnetics and structural mechanics, and transport processes in chemical engineering. A new Structural Mechanics Module is incorporated into FEMLAB and includes applications for shells, beams, and solids. A Chemical Engineering Module studies non-Newtonian fluids, compressible flow, and turbulence, and the Electromagnetics Module studies photonics and optoelectronics.
