NASA's 2004 Software of the Year

NASA Tech Briefs, Oct 2004

In recent years, TetrUSS has been used to support NASA enterprises in projects such as the X-43A mishap investigation, the Mars Lander, Mars Scout, Joint Strike Fighter, Blended Wing Body, and the American Airlines Flight 587 accident investigation with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The software was able to reduce manpower and time costs by tackling complex problems in days instead of weeks, and reduce risk by allowing comprehensive analysis prior to wind tunnel or flight testing.

TetrUSS also is used by many aviation and military agencies and companies including Lockheed-Martin, Piper Aircraft, the Air Force Research Lab, Raytheon, and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which uses it to generate aerodynamic estimates of foreign weapons systems. In non-aerospace fields, TetrUSS was used for artificial heart pump design and as a learning tool by K-12, undergraduate, and graduate education facilities.

The NASA Software of the Year competition began in 1994 to reward outstanding software developed by the agency. The competition is sponsored by the NASA Chief Engineer, with technical support from NASA's Inventions and Contributions Board.
