Topical steroid approved for atopic dermatitis in infants

Nurse Practitioner,  Sep 1999

Glaxo Dermatology's fluticasone propionate (Cutivate Cream, 0.05%) has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of atopic dermatitis in infants ages 3 months and older. The recommended dosage and administration of the product is application of a thin film once or twice daily to the affected skin areas.

In two clinical studies of 491 patients with moderate to severe eczema who were given Cutivate Cream once or twice a day, the incidence of local adverse events in the 119 pediatric patients ages 1 to 12 was comparable to that of the 140 patients ages 13 to 62 years.

The safety and efficacy of the product in pediatric patients younger than 3 months, as well as with administration for more than 4 weeks in the pediatric population, have not been established.

In most cases, Cutivate Cream should not be used in the diaper area.
