insider's view, The

Nurse Author & Editor, Fall 2001 by Fitzpatrick, Joyce J, Douglas, Marilyn, Hooper, Vallire D, Odom, Jan, Yoder-Wise, Patricia S

Applied Nursing Research (ANR) is interested in manuscripts that include reports of original research that is immediately applicable to professional nursing. The applied dimension can be related to either clinical nursing practice or the design of care delivery systems. The distinguishing factor is the applied dimension rather than the type of research design. Thus, studies of all types are welcomed, including multi-site studies, replications of previous research, and exploratory work in significant areas of nursing practice. Articles from teams of clinicians and researchers are welcomed.

The Research Briefs feature includes reports of pilot studies. These reports are generally no longer than five pages. Implications for practice and care delivery should be addressed.

The Clinical Methods features papers that address methodological issues or techniques that are of concern to nurses conducting clinical research.

ANR is a refereed research journal. All manuscripts are reviewed by at least two teams of reviewers. Each team includes one clinician and one researcher, all expert in the content area of the report. The recommendation is that manuscripts (except for the Research Briefs) should be between 10 and 15 typed pages. APA format is required, and electronic submission is encouraged. Editors will work with authors to revise the manuscripts if the quality of the research is rated acceptable by the peer-review process.

Author guidelines are included in each copy of the journal and are available on the Web site through the publisher, WB Saunders. Queries, including an abstract, are welcomed. Contact J. Fitzpatrick, PhD, MBA, RN, FAAN, Applied Nursing Research, New York University Division of Nursing, 246 Greene St., New York, NY 10012.
