Award-winning people at the clinical symposium

Advances in Skin & Wound Care,  Nov/Dec 2000  

Two awards are given annually at the Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care: the Sharon Baranoski Founder's Award and the ConvaTec Nursing Research Scholarship. This year's winners are Luther C. Kloth, MS, PT, CWS, for the Founders Award and Catherine Ratliff, PhD, RN, CWOCN, CS, for the ConvaTec scholarship.

Sharon Baranoski Founder's Award

Luther Moth, MS, PT, CWS, a Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI, is the fourth recipient of the Founder's Award.

Kloth was recognized for his contributions to the advancement of evidence-based wound management. He has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals, with his work focusing on the role of adjunctive therapiessuch as electrical stimulation and normothermia-in wound healing. He is one of the authors and editors of the highly regarded text Wound Healing: Alternatives in Management. In addition, he is a frequent lecturer at national wound conferences. He serves as a member of the Editorial Advisory Panel for Advances in Skin & Wound Care and he was a member of the planning panel for the 15th Annual Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care.

As an active member and leader in the American Physical Therapy Association, Kloth has served 2 terms as the vice president of the association's Wound Management Special Interest Group, a subgroup of its Section on Clinical Electrophysiology. He has also served as president, vice president, and secretary of the Section on Clinical Electrophysiology.

Kloth is a Certified Wound Specialist through the American Academy of Wound Management and he has been active on the organization's Board of Directors and Advisory Board.

The Sharon Baranoski Founder's Award honors overall pursuit of excellence in the field of skin and wound care. The award is given by Springhouse Corporation, publisher of Advances in Skin & Wound Care and one of the sponsors of the Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care, in honor of Sharon Baranoski, MSN, RN, CWOCN, founder and symposium director. This year, the award was supported by an unrestricted educational grant from 3M Health Care.

ConvaTec Nursing Research Scholarship

Catherine Ratliff PhD, RN, CWOCN, CS, is this year's winner of the ConvaTec Nursing Research Scholarship. She is a Clinician V for wound, ostomy, and continence nursing at the UVA Health System, Charlottesville,VA, and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the University of Virginia's School of Nursing and in the School of Medicine's Department of Plastic Surgery.

Dr Ratliff was selected for the scholarship for her proposal, "Assessment of Peristomal Skin Complications." She is the co-director of the multidisciplinary Chronic Wound Care Clinic at the University of Virginia Health System, which focuses on methods to improve healing of chronic wounds. The clinic uses state-of-the-art technology and scientific advances to manage patients, including digital photography, growth factor therapy, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Dr Ratliff was also instrumental in establishing The Preventive Foot Care Clinic as an expansion of the Chronic Wound Care Clinic. In addition, she and a colleague developed a local program to provide services and education on foot care to elderly clients in the community.
