Editorial

Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences, Jun 2009 by Hackett, Rick D

This June issue consists of two primary studies, one in strategy and the other in finance, as well as a special feature (comprising three studies) on the harnessing of information technology in the financial sector. I thank Professors Ali Montazemi (McMaster University) and Zahir Irani (Brunei University) for serving as the Guest Editors of this feature, as well as the contributing authors and reviewers. For an overview of this feature, please refer to the Forward prepared by the Guest Editors, which appears in this issue.

It is always a delight for me to present the Verity Award winners for best management paper published in the preceding year's volume. This year's recipients are Professor Marjorie Armstrong-Stassen and Dr. Franchie Schlosser for their paper titled, Taking a Positive Approach to Organizational Downsizing (Volume 25, issue 2, p. 93). I strongly encourage you to take a moment to read this paper. Marjorie and Franchise are with the Odette School of Business, University of Windsor and will be awarded a plaque and honorarium of $5,000 (split between the two authors) at this year's ASAC conference in Niagara Falls. Without a doubt, there will be a strong turnout at this year's award luncheon and I hope to see you there to join in the celebrations. This is not the first time Professor Armstrong-Stassen has received a best paper award from CJAS. Specifically, her paper titled, The Impact of Hospital Amalgamation on the Job Attitudes of Nurses (Volume 18, issue 3) won her the Best Paper Award in 2001.

I express my utmost appreciation to Verity International for their generous support of this award over the past four years. I would also like to thank the 2008 Verity Award adjudication committee, which consisted of Jim Jawahar (Illinois State), Toni Yoshikawa (McMaster), and Simon Taggar (Wilfrid Laurier). The process for selecting the Verity winners each year consists of: (a) nominations from Division and Guest Editors; (b) selection of the award committee, who each independently assess the nominated papers against a structured scoring template; and (c) if necessary, a conference call between the adjudicators to discuss ratings and reach a decision. As such, the process is completely arms-length and independent of any involvement on my part. Submit a manuscript in 2009, and perhaps your paper will be nominated for this prestigious award.

Melissa Corey, Managing Editor, will be taking maternity leave from mid-May to July of next year. We are currently in the process of selecting someone to assume her position during this absence. On behalf of all submitting authors, Division and Guest Editors, reviewers, and our readers, I wish Melissa and her husband a lifetime of abundant joy with their first child. Melissa, you will be missed by us all!

Should we cross paths at the ASAC conference, introduce yourself, and share with me your ideas for the building the stature of our fine journal.

Cheers,

Rick D. Hackett

ditorial

Marjorie et Francine sont professeures Odette School of Business, University of Windsor. En 2001, son article intitul The Impact of Hospital Amalgamation on the Job Attitudes of Nurses (Volume 18, numro 3) avait reu le prix du meilleur article (Best Paper Award).
