ANNOUNCEMENTS

Chronicle of the Early American Industries Association, Inc., The, Mar/Apr 2004

LET US TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE EAIA!

Do you have friends or acquaintances who might be interested in learning more about the EAIA and possibly becoming members? Here is a perfect opportunity to help them learn about us and encourage them to join the Association!

Beginning this year we will be publishing a quarterly electronic newsletter directed at potential members to let them know more about our organization, its goals, and its publications. Each four or five page issue will contain short notes on our future, present, and past activities, the tables of contents from the current Chronicle and Shavings, excerpts from current and past articles, announcements about our award and research grant programs, and an occasional "whatsit" article or a letter from a member seeking or imparting information. The goal of this newsletter is to encourage people to join the EAIA by letting potential members learn who we are, what we do, and what resources we can provide.

This publication, which will be entitled A Look At The Early American Industries Association, will be sent electronically via e-mail to anyone a current member thinks might be interested in joining the EAIA. If you know someone who might consider becoming a member, or whose interests include early trades and industries, send his or her e-mail address to Phil Stanley, the editor of the this new newsletter, at . That person will be added to the mailing list for one year (four issues), at the end of which time I hope he or she will have become a member.

This is a great opportunity for us to build our membership. There are undoubtedly a number of individuals out there who know little or nothing about our organization, its goals, and activities, but who would welcome the opportunity to learn more, and possibly become members. Give us their e-mail addresses and let us connect up with them!

EAIA-NEWPORT RESTORATION FOUNDATION MEETING

The EAIA in cooperation with the Newport Restoration Foundation is holding a meeting in Newport, Rhode Island, April 17. The NRF has recently acquired the Corey/ Almy House, an outstanding example of a large country farmhouse of the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century era. The four front rooms of this house have a high level of remarkably fine original architectural detail. The house is to be dismantled and moved to a site owned by the NRF. The occasion of this meeting is to allow us to inspect the house while it is in the process of being dismantled in order to see how it was constructed.

The house is located on the grounds of St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Rd. (Rt. 138), Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The program will begin with tool trading at 7:00 a.m. in the church parking lot. At 9:00 a.m. we will have an introductory talk and tours of the house in small groups. In the afternoon there will be an optional tour of the Samuel Whitehorne House, a federal period house at 416 Thames Street in Newport. This handsomely restored NRF house contains Doris Duke's collection of Newport furniture. There will be a $5.00 admission fee for Whitehorne. There is no charge for the morning program. For further information contact Elton W. Hall at or (508) 993-9578.

EAIA TOOL TOUR: ITALY

September 13-26, 2004

The annual EAIA Tool Tour this year will go to Northern Italy, where two of our members, Luigi Nessi and Riccardo Chetoni, will show us their collections. The tour will include stays in Lugano, Florence, Venice, and Bergamo, where we will see some fine tool and science museums as well as many other things for which Italy is famous. While doing this, we will be traveling through some of Northern Italy's most spectacular regions: Tuscany and the Lake District. As always, an optional visit to England to the David Stanley Tool Auction will be offered at the end. For a full itinerary and registration form, call Discover Europe, Ltd. toll free at (866) 563-7077.
